Ear Block pain in ears and Winter season: part 2 Amongst various diseases due to Eustachian blockage, commonest is OMG or otitis Media with Glue. Here sticky mucus gets formed in d middle ear space, which normally has air pocket, leading to Blocked ears, pain in ears, hearing loss etc In case of Otitis Media with Glue( OMG), Decongestants, anti histaminics ( commonly called anti allergic medicines) and oral steroids help. In majority of cases 1-2 weeks is enough to resolve the fluid inside the middle ears and ear blockage or pain subsides. Patient also starts hearing well. What if it doesn't subside? Then it's time to take further action. We need to perform a small but very useful test called IMPEDENCE TYMPANOMETRY TEST. This test will confirm objectively, the status of middle ear pressure, any Fluid or Glue present in ears and if so, severity. If fluid persists beyong 10-15 days, patient may have to undergo a Day Care procedure called myringotomy and grommet insertion. Here we make a small puncture in ear drum , drain the fluid, and keep a ventilation tube. This tube will fall out automatically in few months. This is an useful procedure to protect pus formation in middle ear and long term consequences. Fortunately only 5 percent patients need to undergo this
